Cytotoxic and Cytostatic Waste
Cytotoxic medicines are any drug that has a toxic effect on cells. Such as chemotherapy treatments for cancer which kill off the cancer cells.
Cytostatic drugs suppress cell growth, such as some cancer hormone therapies, which inhibit the multiplication of cancerous cells, so they stop the cancer growing.
Other cytostatic medicines include:
- Most hormonal preparations
- Some anti-viral drugs
- Many antineoplastic agents
- Immunosuppressants
- Some antibiotics
Cytotoxic and cytostatic waste can be produced in tablet, liquid, cream or aerosol form.
These types of treatment are vital to patients but extreme care needs to be taken with the handling and management of any waste drugs.
A waste producer has a legal responsibility to demonstrate that waste drugs have been dealt with appropriately and that you have fulfilled your 'Duty of Care' under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
Ensuring the correct storage of waste drugs before destruction is just as important. Our waste containers are specially designed to help your staff identify and segregate cytotoxic and cytostatic waste.
With a colour coded purple lid, in line with Department of Health Guidance, these bins are a highly visible and recognisable.
Our bins come in sizes from 5 ltr to 50 ltr and are approved for the disposal of medicines, contaminated PPE clothing, contaminated sharps and all disposables associated with the administration of cytotoxic or cytostatic drugs.
