Controlled Drugs Regulations 2006

(Supervision of Management and Use)

Since 1st January, the Controlled Drugs (Supervision of Management and Use) Regulations 2006 have required pharmacies in England to have Standard Operating Procedures for dealing with Controlled Drugs. These procedures must document the approved method for storing, dispensing, recording, transporting, de-naturing and disposing of controlled drugs.

In general, it is recommended that all controlled drugs, which are no longer required, be denatured as soon as possible using an approved denaturing method. The most common and in most cases practical method is the use of specialist CD destruction kits. These kits will ensure that any controlled drugs are safe, cannot be re-used and are without value. Once used, these kits can then be placed in your standard pharmaceutical waste container for collection and disposal.
